Sand and Surf: Hawaii Goes to the Movies on Satellite TV

There’s nothing like a good beach scene to add some extra punch to any movie. Here’s a look at some of the greatest all time cinematic beach scenes from the sultry shores of Oahu to the rocky Scandinavian coastline to the pristine, white sands of Phuket. You can catch most of these movies in HD on satellite TV.

The Seventh Seal: This meisterstuck by the legendary film director Ingmar Bergman features the iconic chess on the beach scene with Max von Sydow. The actor portrays a medieval knight who happens upon death on a chilly Nordic beach. The two have a sit down and begin a game of chess. Sydow is playing for his life. This is far from the classic beach movie scene where you’ve got girls clad in skimpy duds sipping fantastic Hawaiian umbrella drinks; but it is an unforgettable scene, a must see for all film aficionados.

And God Created Woman: Brigitte Bardot at her finest, need we say more? Just 21 in this Roger Vadim film, the French sex symbol made this movie. Playing a feisty and well proportioned young thing roving around the beaches of St. Tropez, Bardot, entranced millions of viewers.

Beach Blanket Bingo: Any list of beach movies wouldn’t be the same without Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, bygone teen idols of the beach movie era. In this fourth installment, we’ve got motorcycle gangs, a mermaid and even Buster Keaton makes a brief cameo. You can watch all the Funicello and Avalon beach movies on the oldies channels courtesy of satellite TV.

Blue Hawaii: Elvis, tanned and buff, stars in this movie. Blue Hawaii is actually the first of three Hawaii films, and some would argue that it is Presley’s best. In the movie, the King plays a fun loving GI who just wants to get a little sun and surf.

Splash: Tom Hanks falls out of a boat and lands on a sandy beach. He meets a mermaid, played by Daryl Hannah. This is the start of a fun little romantic caper directed by Ron Howard. As far as beach movies go, you can’t get much better than mermaids and Tom Hanks.

The Big Lebowski: The Dude, played to perfection by Jeff Bridges releases his friend’s ashes into the great Pacific ocean. There are great shots of the sea and you can’t forget the accompanying eulogy, nor can you forget the part where the ashes proceed to fly right back into the Dude’s face. This is classic Coen brothers film that shouldn’t be missed; it airs often on satellite TV, check your listings.

The Beach: Leo Di Caprio and his two French buddies find an unscathed beach paradise, far from the maddening tourist throngs in Phuket. The place is gorgeous, seriously, breathtaking (this movie demands to be watched in nothing less than HD) and also deadly. Things in paradise aren’t what they seem to be.

The Talented Mr. Ripley: Minghella’s flawless Italian backdrop is stunning. The incredible fierce blue ocean, the sun and Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow playing the deliciously rich and spoiled couple Dickie and Marge make this movie a true visual treat.
