Pain in my ankle now I have started running need assistance?

Karate student now have pain in what I hope is not my Achilles tendon! running to keep weight down am I doing more damage by running every other day for twenty minutes at a time – don’t know how far I cove rin that time just ten minutes out then back home. TIA

Hi there

First thing you should do is go see your GP just to make sure its nothing serious. I know GP’s are a complete waste of time when it comes to muscles and joints but go through the proper channels just to be sure. Here’s a few other things that might help you here.

Firstly make sure you are drinking plenty of water before and during exercise as its vital for your muscles and joints.

Secondly i know is sounds silly but make sure your running shoes provide the right support. Buy ones that have a good foot arch in them.

Thirdly try some basic foot exercises such as rotation of the ankles and big toes before and after your running. You can also use the base of your thumb to run down the muscles in your foot arch to massage out any spasms. But do this carefully because if you don’t know what your doing you can do more damage.

Key here is to eat a little less run a little more. I know this is hard because all the stuff that tastes so great is always bad for us. :-(

Now I’m off to buy my bacon sandwich. ;-)
