What are the building restrictions on a residential house in Australia?

How far from the boundary line can you build and are there height restrictions?

different states and for that matter towns have different rules. for instance if you live in darwin you have to comply with cyclone standards whereas in adelaide there are no such restrictions as far as cyclones go. where i come from there are height restrictions and all blocks are zones, some for single residence, some for a couple of units/flats and others for up to 6 units/flats and yet others for numerous units/flats
